Organizing 101: The Basics

I am so excited to jump into this series! For those of you who are new to the Organize Nashville community, welcome! We are about to embark on an exciting journey to get your home organized from top to bottom in 2016. If you missed Monday’s post on planning for this organizational undertaking, be sure to check it out.

You will notice throughout the series that my method for organizing each room is similar. My hope is that with practice and with time you with become an organizing guru too! Now, lets get started! Today I am taking you through the basics of my organizing method.

The Organzing Process // Organize NashvilleFirst, you will remove all items from every drawer, corner, basket, nook and cranny in the space designated to be organized that week. Then comes a very large sorting session where you will quickly put things into  one of three categories categories: KEEP, DONATE, or DISCARD.  You are not organizing at this point! As you put things into these categories, you will inspect items for rips, stains, broken and missing parts and make a quick judgement about where they should go.

Once you have sorted each and every item into one of the three categories above, discard your trash and put your donate pile in box that is ready to be taken to the nearest drop off center.

Now, we will focus on the items you intend to keep. You will now further divide your keep pile into categories. I will help you figure out what those categories are each week. (Still no organizing, product purchasing, or putting things back yet!!) Once your keep pile is divided, its time to clean the space. With everything removed it is so much easier to deep clean and start fresh.

Once you have cleaned, the organizing piece of the process begins and I will walk you step by step through making your space beautiful, functional, and clutter free, as well as tips for maintaining an organized space.
