12 Days of Decluttering Challenge - Day 1

Hey there and welcome to the 12 Days of Decluttering Challenege. I am so excited to do this right along with you for the next 12 days. The purpose of this challenge is to cleanse our homes of the obviously unncessary. We are taking the first small steps toward a larger goal of getting organized with the hopes of building momentum like a snowball that rolls into an organizing avalanche.

Each day, I will share the day’s challenge on instagram stories. These are somewhere in between Shira Gill’s famous #15minwin and a full on Julie Morgenstern 4 hour sorting session. And if you don’t know these ladies, go follow them here and here. They are organizing goddesses and teach me so much.

Should you chose to accept this mission, here is your first task:

Place a donate box at the base of your closet

Total time: < 2min

Find a bin, basket or empty box and place it at the base of your closet. This will continually serve as your spot to put things that:

  • no longer serve you

  • you try on and don’t fit well

  • are stained, ripped or you know you won’t take to repair

  • you haven’t worn in years

  • you just don’t love or use anymore

Establish a relocate bin

Total time:< 2min

This one is new to me this year and has helped corral miscellaneous items throughout the week that land where they do not belong. Like the hammer we brought up from the garage to hang a picture but never got returned; the dress that I need to bring back to a girlfriend but never made it to my car, or any other random thing that lands on my kitchen counter and does not belong. This is my quick and dirty trick to declutter our countertops. When it’s full, its my trigger ot empty it and put things back where they go.

Here’s a look at mine:

See you tomorrow for Day #2!
