12 Days of Decluttering Challenge - Day 6

Congrats! After today we are half way through the 12 Days of Decluttering Challenge. Are you feeling lighter yet? Today’s challenge focuses on decluttering old technology. Are you ready?

If you are new to the challenge, its not too late. Start here. Each day I’m sharing a bite-size challenge to help you declutter your home. Be sure to follow along with me on Instagram stories throughout the days of this challenge. You’ll be able to share your decluttered spaces and see others who are also part of the challenge.

Do you even have a DVD player?

Technology moves at the speed of light these days and I know it feels like everyday there is a new phone to upgrade to. I’m actually really thankful for apps on the TV that allow us to watch the latest movie rather than needing the latest Blue Ray player. Even though technology will keep changing, hopefully the volume of equipment will decrease moving forward. That said, most of you have a pile of old and outdated tachnology laying around somewhere.

Step 1: Gather all of your outdated…

  • Cellphones, mobiles, cordless home phones, wind ups and rotary phones

  • Movie playing devices: Projector, DVD player, VHS player, Blu Ray player

  • Music listening devices: Cassette tape, CD player, boombox, mp3 player, walkman, radio, discman, etc

  • Computers, laptops, blackberries, tablets, kindles, e-readers, v-tech learning devices

  • Gaming Consoles

  • The CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes that go with them

  • ALL THE BOXES THEY CAME IN!

Step 2: Throw away or recycle all of the boxes.

Step 3: Get rid of all technology (I’ll tell you how and wear below) that:

  • Is older than your oldest child

  • You haven’t used in over a year

  • You have already bought the upgraded version of (iphones, kindles, etc)

  • No longer operates correctly or needs repair

The EPA has a full guide to where to donate or discard old technology safely. Here are three of my favorite options:

  • Sell at a store like McKays

  • Bring to Best Buy. They take up to 3 household items per day and recyle tons of items for free.

  • Apple gives buyback credits on many of their devices

  • Amazon offers trade in value for old devices

  • Sprint and T-Mobile also offer buy-back and recycling programs.

I look forward to joining you for Day #7 of our decluttering journey. See you on the ‘gram!

XO
