How to Store & Organize ALL the New Toys

If you are feeling a touch bit anxious about where you are going to store and organize all the new toys, I get it. I organized our toy closet long before the holidays and even decluttered the toys Tommy outgrew (more on that later) and I STILL felt the pinch of stress when thinking about where everything was going to go after Christmas was over. So I’m putting together my best tips for organizing toys and sharing exactly how I did it in our small space closet.

When it comes to a storing and organizing toys of any kind, I want three things: durable, interchangeable, + colorful. So that’s exactly what I had in mind when I put together this playroom closet. You can create a similar space in your own home by identifying several shelves, a closet or even a cube storage unit for the storage of toys.

For this closet, we wanted to make sure that it was easy to see all available toys. We wanted to make toy rotation a breeze and make the most of the non-adjustable shelving space. For that reason we used clear stackable bins to house each category of toy. I highly suggest using BROAD categories for your toys so that they can grow with your child. Here are some suggested categories:

  • Blocks

  • Music

  • Animals

  • Autos // Things That Go

  • Puzzles

  • Cards

  • Arts + Crafts

On the upper shelf we combined books and games in rainbow order for easy recognition by kids and adults alike.

Last but not least we wrote directly on the bins with a white chalk marker. Here’s how to do this in your own home:

  1. Identify the space(s) you would like to store toys.

  2. Take everything out and gather ALL the toys.

  3. Sort into three piles (KEEP, DONATE + TRASH) and if appropriate enlist the kids to help!

  4. Further organize the KEEP pile by grouping into broad categories. Then contain those items and label the storage bins.

  5. Remember, your space determines the amount of toys you can have. When you are out of room, its time to repeat steps 1-4 or send some toys to grandmas.

There is no magic solution to storing toys adn there are so many options out there. My biggest shout out would be to “KEEP IT SIMPLE!” Don’t overcomplicate it or your kids won’t be able to keep up either. ar
