Entertainment Center: Styling Shelves
ICYMI - Go here and here first to read all about our collaboration with Inspired Closets on the installation of our beautiful entertainment center in our playroom.
No doubt that I was excited to have a custom built-in entertainment center. But, I’m not gonna lie - I was most excited about styling the shelves. I pinned a few ideas (which I’ll share below) and then I found objects (some of my favorites are from the Studio Mcgee line at Target), books and photos that went with the overall scheme of our playroom. I love how it turned out!
I’ll be sharing my process for styling the shelves, products I used and a few tips that help me keep the look cohesive below!
If you’ve stumbled on my post about creating a mood board, then you know that I like to start with a few inspiration images to create a vision for the direction of the space.
Key Takeaways:
Light and bright
Coastal vibe
Wood and woven for texture
One color use subtely, everything else neutral
Not overcrowded, simple
From there I created my mood board (above) and shopped both my house and Target I love Hearth and Hand and Studio Mcgee for stuff like this!) for items that felt like they matched the vision board. I played with the objects, books and photos until they landed where they are now. No exact science, but I do share a few tips for styling below to help you get started. As it goes for organizing products and shelf styling, buy more decorative objects than you think you need. You can always return the extra, but options allow you try a variety of layouts until you find what works best.
Shelf Styling Tips:

Get the same item in varying heights
Cluster things in groups of three, five, seven (odd numbers)
Visually divide your shelves in half and try to create balance on each side
Use books for height and color
Start with a clean slate (take everything off the shelves before you start)

Use pretty baskets and bowls for practical storage
