How to build a capsule wardrobe

If you are looking to keep your closet organized and actually see the items you wear and love, then a capsule wardrobe might be just the organizing solution you’re looking for. I’ve been working to simplify my own closet over the last year (even though I’ve been in between sizes since having Fitz) and the capsule wardrobe helped me do just that.

A capsule wardrobe is a set group of clothes that are chosen for a dedicated purpose or season. There is not a limit to the number of clothes in a capsule wardrobe, although most people include less than 50 items including accessories. Capsules can be dedicated to a season (like this fall capsule wardrobe), a type of clothing - like workwear or athleisure, or even a time period like the second trimester.

The main idea is that you pick a group of items that coordinate with one another, that fit you well and that you love. I’ve found that I’m able to buy fewer better pieces of clothing and spend LESS MONEY when I cultivate a collection of clothes for a dedicated season.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve figured out my own style more and more. And although I’m not a fashionista, I do feel put together and confident since I’ve started getting dressed using this capsule approach. Not to mention, I actually get dressed which used to be kind of a thing and now is way less stressful. Can you relate?

I would describe my style as neutral-classic. You aren’t going to see a bunch of bright colors or bold prints in my closet but that doesn’t mean that your own capsule can’t contain those things. I’m sharing the items that make up my fall capsule wardrobe and what works for me and my climate (Nashville being super hot through end of September). Make sure to inject your own style into your capsule! I hope this will be a great jumping off point as we head into the fall season.

You should know that I own all of the items linked below (or something similar). I tried to link both high and low price points for each item so that there is something for everyone. I’ll also be putting together a splurge vs save post (similar to this one here) so that you can see all of the options. Also, be on the lookout for sharing and styling different items from this fall capsule over the coming weeks over on instagram.
