Organize: Ty’s Hunting Closet

When your husband is an avid hunter, there is an unspoken agreement to certain things in your house. Ours- a 14 point Alabama State Record deer over our mantle. AND most recently, a spot for all of his hunting gear. ENTER THE HUNTING CLOSET. Ty wanted one spot for all of his hunting gear (and so did I!). Before this project, his hunting gear, was in his closet, in the garage, in the current closet, and a dresser in the basement playroom. That’s a LOT of places. We wanted to create a safe place for all of his hunting gear, as well as a spot where he could get to it easily. I hope this will be helpful if you want to create a hunting closet of your own!

Before

We took a traditional storage closet with basic shalves and clothing rod and turned in into a hunting closet.

The first thing we did is remove everything from the hunting closet. Then we gathered all of Ty’s hunting supplies from around the house. This enabled us to make a plan and designate a space for everything.

During

We wanted to organize the space WITHOUT changing the existing structure so we used the existing shelving and clothing rod, and added organizing products to organize the hunting gear.

After

On the right side of the closet (above), we wanted to make getting dressed to go hunting very easy. I hung vests, safety gear, pants, jackets, wool underwear and more on the hangers. From there we divided the hats and gloves, socks, and masks into three different bins. Shoes are on the shelf above the hanging gear and a drying rack for boots is also nearby. I hanged all of his gear and used these round dividers to designate areas for each type of clothing: Jackets, Vests, Shirts, and Pants. Above that, we placed his boots and a bin full of tree stand gear. The tree stands are stacked below the clothing. You can also see how we mounted his bow on the wall using these garage rings.

On the left side of the closet, we used clear large bins to organize the gear into broad categories. We created a grab-n-go station so that getting ready for each hunting day super easy. I had Ty divide his gear into categories of like items (LBH I did not know what went where and had SO MANY questions!)

My favorite part of the closet are these open bins. I love that we created a grab-n-go station for the items he uses most often.

GUN SAFETY

For this closet, we house the unarmed guns in a gun case that is double locked. We use these pelican travel cases. The keys are stored in a separate location. In addition, ammo is stored on a high shelf. The door to the closet is also locked. We also are looking into investing into a safe for the closet as part of phase two of this organization project.
