Nursery Transformation

ICYMI, Fitz is here! We welcomed our sweet boy into the world on January 9th and are sunk. So in honor of his big debut, I thought I’d share his nursery, what I did to organize it and which products I used to do it.

I wanted to transform the nursey into a space that was just for him (even though it served as Tommy’s room prior to his big Toddler Room Transformation). I love how it turned out and am even more pleased with the organizing solutions for the closet and dresser. I hope the storage solutions will help you in your own nursery or kid’s room too!

Prior to the room redo, the room was already wallpapered in this Thibaut geometric wallpaper. We’d also installed these acrylic shelves and reused the rug from Tommy’s previous nursery (linked here). We did replace an older West Elm Graham Glider in grey that we loved with this lighter performance fabric glider and ottoman. I really wanted a place to put my feet up and love the added storage the ottoman provides (it lifts up!). The cream color really brightens the space and I’m glad we found an affordable option to replace the other.

These acrylic shelves are my favorite way to display books. When we switched from a basket to the wall book storage, Tommy started to sit independently and “read” through his books. He also loves picking out what we’re going to read at bedtime now that he can see all the options. We also added in this cute lumbar pillow (similar here) with a black lab (just like our dog, Coden) to tie in the blue throughout the room.

Probably the biggest transformation of all is the dresser area. We took our existing Ikea Hemnes Dresser and painted it a dark naval blue (color matched to the closet baskets). We also swapped a gold round starburst mirror for this white lacquer rectangular mirror (similar here) and removed the dual lamps for a wooden star lamp (both from At Home). You can also see our Kee-Ka-Roo Changing Pad which I highly recommend if you are in the market. I love that it wipes clean so easily.

As far as organizing the interior of the drawers, I wanted to make sure there were lots of options for containing smaller objects, as well as dividers for holding onesies and blankets upright. I used these same dividers that I used previously in Tommy’s nursery. I tried a few other options before (including a divided bin designed for the Hemnes dresser) and this is definitely what worked best for me. I love that I can easily adjust them as sizes change.

For this go around, I also added in tons of these small white bins to corral small items like diaper creams, medicines, teethers, tiny socks and hats… you get the idea. These are jenga-ed in all the drawer to maximize space and contain all loose items.

Last but not least, we maximized the space in the closet by using these beautiful white woven bins (you may recognize these from Ty’s Tuxedo Style Closet) for hats, bibs, size up and size down clothes. I used gold bin clip labels for the bins. I also used an acrylic riser for tiny shoes so we could see everything. On the top shelf the deep blue bins are the inspiration for the dresser paint color and also will hold all of baby boy #2’s sentimental items for year 1. Next to that are these super durable canvas quilted bins for housing blankets and other baby gear. The inside is lined and super easy to wipe out which I love.

I’m so excited to welcome baby boy into his very own space. How do you think it turned out?
