MCM Ranch Reveal: How Instagram Styled our Entryway

Sharing all the details of our entryway Including before and after photos, design plans and the big reveal of our styled by Instagram entryway. For this space, I took to the masses and polled Instagram to figure out how to style our entryway. I’m sharing all the details for what went wrong, how y’all helped me fix it and what I learned about entryway styling.

When we moved into our midcentury moden ranch home, I was so excited to have a dedicated front entryway. Plus the tall ceilings were an added bonus that I was so excited to highlight. I searched facebook marketplace for 4 months looking for the perfect vintage piece of furniture to anchor the space. Then I patIEntly waited for the Way Day Sale so I could order a gigantic mirror to go over it. But when I put it all together, something was not right. Womp, womp. My big anticipated entryway reveal was a total flop. But I couldn’t figure out what was off about the space. So I took to the masses and polled y’all on Instagram to figure it out.

When I asked the group, most everyone said the lamp shades were just off. Another group thought the mirror should be brass (and I did too!) and a handful of people told me it was something else that was just not jiving in the entryway. Those handful are where I found the real solution to the entryway. One friend mentioned the proportions were off (including the small lamp shades) and another friend sent me this mock-up:

Here is the advice I got from my oh-so-talented friend that gave me a light bulb moment on how to fix it:

  • You need a big green plant

  • Add more height between the frames/books because there isn’t enough variation

  • Maybe a bigger book at the bottom to have a stack of three

  • Add more depth to cover the mirror (layered frames, for example)

  • Wider, bigger shades, large art or a fat vase with tall stems

I took ALL of her advice and here is how Instagram styled my entryway:

My new motto: Go big or go home. I learned that proportions are everything! It helped to see a few inspiration images and have another eye to really hone in on what wasn’t working. The funny thing is that I thought it was the latch on the mirror or the color of the mirror that wasn’t working. Fixing either of these wouldn’t have fixed the issue. I am so glad I took to the masses to style my entryway. What do you think of the final result?

Here is a look at the up close details, and how I was able to pull together the vision that my friend sent over. I find that breaking down the details of any project whether its design, styling or organizing really helps if you are trying to recreate a look. And since I am NOT AN EXPERT on design or styling, I wanted to point you to one of my favorite stylists, Emily Henderson. She has an amazing style guide formula for entryways here.
