SOS: Anna’s Extra Long Closet Shelf

Welcome back to the SOS! Blog Series. This week, I have the oppotunity to help Anna in her closet. Anna wrote me shortly after the new year to ask about the best shelf dividers for a faily long and deep closet shelf. She tried clear boxes in the past but found they were too difficult to maneaver. Has this ever happened to you? It looks good and organized but the function just isn’t quite right?

I gave Anna two options for her space. Both would work but depend more on her organizing tendancies and budget for the space. Which one would you choose?

Solution 1:

Use 4 acrylic shelf dividers spaced about 12” apart to create 5 slots for folded sweaters. I recommend stacking no more than 3-4 high so that the sweaters stay folded and accessible.

This is a great option if you feel like you will be able to keep the sweaters folded.

Solution 2:

Use large drawers stacked 2 high by 5 across (10 drawers total) and fold sweaters inside (likely 2-3 per drawer depending on weight). This will keep sweaters folded neatly while still allowing you to see all of your options. This is a great option if you don’t mind having to open and close drawers AND can reach them easily. It is the more expensive of the two options.

  • Make sure the organizing solution you chose makes sense for 1) how you use the space and 2) who you are

  • Long shelves can be tricky. Divide them up using storage options like drawers or shelf dividers.

  • Folding Sweaters well is essential to keep the space looking tidy. Here is a great video on how to do just that: https://www.instagram.com/p/CCKUcYkHS-0/?igshid=1s9frc4em0gbe
