Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Tis the season for the winter capsule wardrobe. This season I’m focused on identifying great basics that will build your core wardrobe. I heard recently that if you’re having trouble getting dressed, it’s probably because you don’t have good basics. And its so true! This capsule wardrobe is classic modern style but I’ve really kept trendier items to a minimum. In each section, I’ve also included the one item I’d buy if I had to pick just one. I really hope this will be a helpful starting point for you!

I try to pick around 25 pieces for each capsule and encourage you to shop your closet before ever heading to the store. If you’re in need of some updated pieces or ideas, you can always click on the images below to find more options. For this winter, I opted for a lot of neutral pieces with a focus on affordable high quality jackets for layering so you can be warm and stylish.

SCROLL TO THE END FOR THE COMPLETE LIST OF WNTER CAPSULE ITEMS

Outerwear

I’m kicking off the capsule with outerwear. You’ll notice that many of the capsule items rolled forward from the fall with one distinct difference - the jackets! With colder temps, we need to layer up with some heavier coats. These jackets are affordable (most under $200) and classic cuts that will last for years. If you have to start with one piece, I’d choose the black overcoat. It is timeless and versatile.

Sweaters

Next up is a selection of sweaters, sweatshirts and longer sweaters to layer under your jackets. Most of these can be dressed up or down so whether you are on a zoom call, chasing a toddler or going on a date - they will work! My go-to sweater this season is this one - I have it in black and grey. I recommend starting with the classic cashmere crewneck in a black, grey, or cream and then adding in these other pieces. If you’re on the go a lot like me, then these $20 sweatshirts in a neutral are also any easy way to feel pulled together (and warm) on the coldest days.

Bottoms

If you follow me on instagram, then you’ve probably heard me talk about my wear with any shoe jeans. I’ve deemed these the magic jeans and I recommend them in no less than three colors for the winter capsule. I’ve also included my favorite pair of joggers - believe it or not these look great with a cashmere sweater or a long coatigan. If you only have room to buy one pair of pants this season, I’d suggest these in black.

Layers

The easiest way to pull it all together and feel stylish in the winter is having the right layers. I’ve included my favorite long sleeve tops as well as scarves, gloves and hats to pull it all together. You can be stylish AND warm. The key is to keep it neutral and stay within the same color palette - black, grey and camel.

SHOES

I find this to be the most difficult part of getting dressed in the winter. Especially on cold AND wet days. I pulled together my favorite boots - that all work with the MAGIC JEANS I’ve linked above. If you have to buy one pair of shoes this season, let it be the weatherproof chelsea style boots. I’ve got several of my favorites linked including the pair I own.
